Missing Google Business Profile reviews can hurt your local rankings and the trust customers place in you. Reviews can vanish for a few reasons: a Google display outage, policy removals, deleted accounts, or a wave of fake reviews from scammers. Here’s how to tell what happened and what to do about each one.
Why Google Business Profile Reviews Matter
Google Business Profile reviews are one of the strongest tools for building a reputation and improving local search rankings. They influence customer trust, shape buying decisions, and help businesses stand out in Google’s Local Pack and Maps.
- They improve local search rankings. Businesses with more high-quality reviews rank higher in local results and Google Maps.
- They build customer trust. People are more likely to trust a business with many positive reviews.
- They increase conversions. More reviews lead to more engagement, website visits, and inquiries.
- They set you apart. Reviews help you stand out in competitive industries.
A sudden drop in reviews or a lower star rating can hurt your visibility, reputation, and revenue.
Google Confirmed a Business Profile Reviews Outage
In February 2025, many businesses reported missing reviews. Google confirmed a display issue that caused some reviews to disappear or show incorrect counts. Google said the reviews themselves had not been removed and that it was working on a fix.
At the same time, Google reminded businesses that some missing reviews may have been removed for policy violations. So some businesses would see reviews return once the outage was fixed, while others lost reviews permanently.
Why Some Google Reviews Go Missing
Technical glitches
Display issues can show lower-than-actual review counts. Reviews hidden this way usually come back once Google fixes the problem.
Policy removals
Google removes reviews that break its policies, including:
- Spam and fake reviews
- Inappropriate or offensive content
- Multiple reviews from the same user
- Reviews flagged for suspicious activity
Deleted accounts and filters
If the person who left a review deletes their Google account, the review disappears too. Google’s automated filters can also hide legitimate reviews by mistake, and algorithm updates can affect what shows.
The Google Review Mafia Extortion Scam
If you’ve noticed a sudden flood of 1-star reviews on your profile, you may not be dealing with real customers. A newer scam works like this: a group posts fake negative reviews, then emails a demand for payment to “make them disappear.” It’s basically the Mafia, with less class and more spam. The goal is to scare you into paying.
A real example
One of our clients was hit with more than 10 negative reviews in less than 24 hours. None came from actual customers. Within hours, Your Brand Voice got the fake reviews cleared, protecting the client’s reputation and restoring confidence in their profile.
What to do if you’re targeted
- Do not respond. Engaging only validates the scammer.
- Report the reviews to Google. Use Google’s reporting tools to flag the suspicious activity.
- Be patient. Google has become much faster at spotting review-bombing patterns. Reviews are often marked “under investigation” before they’re removed, so the public can see they aren’t legitimate.
Waiting is stressful, but reporting and letting Google’s system do the work is the best move. Don’t give scammers your time or your money.
What to Do If Your Reviews Are Missing
- Check for an outage. Look at Google’s support forums and help center for official updates.
- Check the policies. Review Google’s guidelines to see whether any removed reviews broke the rules.
- Keep asking for reviews. Ask happy customers after a purchase or service, send follow-up emails or texts with a direct review link, and share your review link on your website and social media.
- Contact Google support. If you believe reviews were removed by mistake, submit a support request. Response times can be slow when an issue is widespread.
